Subject: For early release of three Mon political prisoners in MyanmarDear Secretary General,
We would like to bring the above-mentioned matter into your attention and would request you, in your capacity as the Secretary General of the United Nations, to encourage the Myanmar Government to consider an early release of these three Mon political leaders who have been imprisoned solely for the peaceful expression of their political views.
They were arrested in September 1998 in connection with their alleged support for the formation of the Committee Representing the Peoples Parliament which was established following the military authorities consistent refusal to acknowledge the 1990 election results and to convene the Peoples Parliament. Of the three Mon leaders, Nai Ngwe Thein, a veteran Mon political leader was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment, while Dr. Min Soe Lin and Dr. Min Kyi Win were sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment respectively.
They have not been allowed to be visited by family members. While no recent information on their situations is received, we are concerned for their physical wellbeing in prison. Nai Ngwe Thein, in his old age and serving his jail sentence in the notorious Insein Prison in capital Yangon, is believed to have been subject to more appalling prison conditions.
We firmly believe that your encouragement to the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) will help bring about an early release of these three Mon political leaders. Some personal data of the three persons are attached with this letter. We thank you very much in advance for your help on this matter.
Yours sincerely,
