Celebration of 60th anniversary of Mon National Day

On February 2, 2007, Mon Community of  Fort Wayne celebrated 60th anniversary of Mon National Day at North Side High School in Fort Wayne , Indiana. Over 600 people from various nationalities joined the celebration. Many distinguished guests were also invited to the event. Among them were Congressman Mark E. Souder (R), North High School Principal, Mr. Charley Deford, Assistant Principal, Ms. Dorothy Lovett and Mr. Frederick C. Gilbert from Social Welfare Department. In his speech, Congressman Sounder promised that he would present the situation of Mon refugees at Thai-Burma border to  the U.S. government in order to help them resettle in the U.S. According to Nai Michael Mon, the chairman of Mon National Committee at Fort Wayne,  the celebration has successfully ended with colorful Mon traditional dances and Mon music. Although Mon people outside Burma freely celebrate their  national day,  Mon people inside Burma are not freely to celebration their national day. They are often fear of persecution by Burmese military regime for celebrating their national day.
