MYC elected new Chairman

Bangkok, October 8: The annual meeting of Mon Youth Community Bangkok was
held in a Hotel in Bangkok. About 150 participants including
representatives of Mon political organizations attended the meeting. The
opening ceremony was led by Nai Muen Smarkrathakit, chief advisor, and the
moderator was Nai Kitti Worakunkitti. There were several special guest
speakers, such Prof Dr. Phirom Chantharwon, (faculty of economics,
Thammasart University), Prof Snan Meekhanmark (faculty of education,
Srinakharinvirojna University) and Nai Thaung Shein, Mon MP (Mon National
Democratic Front).

The election of New MYC was held in the afternoon section. Ms Armphai
Markhamarn (MA in education from Chulalongkorn University) was elected as
new chairman. Ms Armphai was born in a Mon village in Barn Pong District.
After she graduated from the university, she worked as a teacher in her
home village until she resigned from her job in 1999. She is unmarried and
now 58 years old. She is the first lady as the chairman of MYC since its
was formed 23 years ago.

(The following is the summary of Nai Thaung Shein's speech)
"I am very happy", said Nai Thaung Shein, "to attend this MYC meeting, but
unhappy to hear very few Mon words speaking in this meeting." He briefly
introduced the audience about the Mon political organizations, NMSP and
MNDF. His party MNDF is struggling by means of democracy and participated
in 1990 general election. MNDF won some seats, but as the world know well,
the Burmese military dictators didn't respected the result of the election.
More over it arrested hundreds of MPs including Mon MPs. So he decided to
flee out of Burma in order to carry out political activities. SPDC forced
the Mon politicians to promise not to involve in politic. His party has
joined hands with other democratic parties in order to build the federal
union in his country where the Mon people can fully practice their culture,
literature and political rights.
