Statement of Condolence on the Assasination of Dr. Min Naung
May 5, 2009
We, the Overseas Mon communities, extend our deepest condolences on the tragic and untimely death of Dr. Min Naung. Dr. Nai Min Naung, the NMSP’s District Committee member and General Secretary of the Mon Relief and Development Committee (MRDC) was assassinated on April 18, 2009 by unknown gunmen on his way back from a duty on a Mon-state highway close to the SPDC’s Southeast Command, in Moulmein, Mon State.
We are deeply saddened by the irreplaceable loss of Dr. Min Naung, a dedicated young leader who has motivated many young Mon to take on a remarkable mission. His leadership was an inspiration not only to the NMSP members but also to all young Mon. Dr. Min Naung has provided an example of self-sacrifice, dedication and steadfast devotion to our national duty. He is , in fact, an exemplary role model for all young Mon.
His death not only traumatizes and devastates Mon People in Monland, it also shocks our Mon communities worldwide. We are extremely shocked, saddened, and outraged over this kind of senseless act of violence. No cause, and no hatred, can justify such horrific acts of murder and destruction. This unspeakable and cowardly act appears especially horrific when it occurs in an area controlled by the SPDC.
We also send our profound condolences to the NMSP and Mon People in general who are also sharing the same loss together. Dr. Min Naung will be fondly remembered for his dedication, devotion and the countless contributions he has made to our Mon national liberation movement. We pray that his national spirit lives on in our Mon people, especially in the new generation of young Mon leaders.
