The Statement Condemning SPDC's Travel Blockades on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
and members

Date: 29/8/2000

It appears That SPDC's custody and imprisonment of U Aye Tha Aung,
Secretary of Committee Representing People Parliament (CRPP) and also the
elected representative of Arakan League for Democracy (ALD), Nai Tun Thein,
Chairman of Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF), Nai Ngwe Thein,
Vice-Chairman of MNDF, Dr Min Soe Lin, Secretary General of MNDF, Dr Min
Kyi Win, Co-Secretary of MNDF and its members including elected
representatives and members of other respective parties up to this day was
tantamount to a systematic destruction of the solidarity of the ethnic
minority groups. During the 1988 pro-democracy uprising, tens of thousands
of Mon people actively participated in the ouster of the one party BSPP
totalitarian regime.

In a constant opposition to the dictatorship, the Mon people overwhelming
voted for MNDF and NLD for the establishment of a new federal union of
Myanmar that is ruled by democratically elected government. Depending on
the gun power, SPDC military junta has maintained a tight grip over the
country as it was in the form of feudalism and adopted a policy of a
systematical annihilation and forced assimilation towards ethnic minority
groups. That the Mon leaders found no alternative but to adopt a
democratic approach towards self-determination and equality struggle as
they were part of CRPP. It is a very degrading behavior for SPDC to
irresponsibly claim that Aung San Suu Kyi is in a position to be vulnerable
to assassination plot in her trip by armed ethnic insurgent groups.

Conspicuously, it is SPDC gross infringement of freedom of movement and
assembly that was included in the universal declaration of Human Rights.
We, therefore, MNDF strongly demand that unlawful travel restrictions on
Aung San Suu Kyi and the senseless custody of all political leaders be
ended immediately and unconditionally.
